Prevention and Early Detection of Breast Cancer

Detect Breast Cancer EarlyYou can’t completely prevent cancer. But if you are at average risk for breast cancer, you may be able to lower your risk somewhat. Women who are at less risk for breast cancer:
  • Have given birth to several children
  • Breast-fed their children for several months
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Don’t use hormone replacement therapy after menopause
Once you’ve made any lifestyle changes that seem reasonable to you, the most important thing you can do is detect cancer early.

How to Detect Breast Cancer Early

  • Get annual mammograms beginning at age 40
  • Perform monthly breast self-exams
  • Have a professional breast exam every year if over 40, every three years if younger
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a family history of breast cancer or any breast changes
